With our student teacher, Erica, students in Second Grade have been learning about 2D and 3D shapes through hands-on activities. We started at 2D shapes and learned about the properties of these shapes, including the number of faces, edges, and corners each shape had, and applying that knowledge to build our own shapes out of straws and play dough. As we continued the unit, we learned about the properties and the vocabulary associated with 3D shapes. We learned the difference between polyhedron and non-polyhedron, as well as the number of faces, edges, and corners each solid shape had. We then used our knowledge on these shapes to build our own solid shapes, out of toothpicks and marshmallows, and displayed them for the whole school to see.
