Our youngest students typically have an ABC center once a day. During this time they play language arts games with a teacher or an older student. Sometimes the activities involve all three Kindergarten students, sometimes one other student and sometimes the game is played one-on-one.
This fall the children have been learning and practicing recognizing the letters of the alphabet, the sounds the letters make and words that might begin with that sound. The children have played games like Speedy Fishing, Alphabet Bingo, AB Seas, and I Spy to name a few. The children also complete work jobs such as Letter Sorts. Here they are given pictures, and their task is to sort them by the first sound of the object. To support these games, twice a week, the children complete workbook pages in their Getting Ready for the Code workbooks.
