Doug Dubois, father of Cyrus, introduced us to the fascinating work of MacArthur Fellow, Wendy Ewald who began fostering literacy via photography and storytelling with children in the 1970s. Together we decided to create an alphabet book, randomly assigning each child a letter of the alphabet. Doug and Leah came to our school multiple times and transformed the upper floor into a photographer’s studio. Children took turns, working with Doug, to create an image that illustrated their letter. For the language arts part of this project we were inspired by Arthur Rimbaud, a French poet (1854-1891) and his concept of associating letters with colors and objects. We encouraged children to be as free and surprising as the examples of poems we shared by Rimbaud and others. This assignment was modified for our youngest children, some of who explored the Haiku, a Japanese poetic form.
