For our study of Ancient Egypt we started learning about its geography and where Egypt was located. Children drew maps and located the Mediterranean Sea, Red Sea, the Nile, Sahara Desert, Europe, Upper Egypt, Lower Egypt and Giza. We asked the question, “How do we know what we know about Ancient Egypt?” Children working with a partner were assigned research quests of important events which were later placed on our timeline showing over 3,000 years! They had to find out when the Persian Empire attacked and conquered Egypt? When the process of mummification began and so on. Through assigned reading children learned about the gift of the Nile, the religion of the Ancient Egyptians, their gods, hieroglyphics and architecture. Throughout the unit we watched short videos to support our research. Finally children, working with a partner, were assigned a topic to research. Topics included the Art and Music of Ancient Egypt, The Old, Middle and New Kingdom, King Tutankhamun, and the foods and homes of Ancient Egyptians. After they create posters showing what they learned, they will be responsible for teaching this content to their peers.
