This was five-day unit on ancient Egyptian beliefs taught by our student teacher. We focused on their religion because it was such a large part of every aspect of ancient Egyptian life. We focused a lot on how all ancient Egyptians did things in their daily life to please their gods and to increase their chances of having a better experience in the afterlife once they died. Students really enjoyed learning about all the different gods and goddesses through guessing games, fun songs, and slideshows. Students were even able to create their own god or goddess. Students showed their creativity and personalities when creating their own god and writing a myth to go along with it. Students also really enjoyed learning about the mummification process. They wanted to learn about all the nasty things that went along with taking out organs putting them in jars and pulling the brain out through the nose. They even wanted to see if they could mummify something so as an investigation choice I had students mummify apples that they carved faces into put into salt and leave to dry out for a week. Another part of the unit that students really enjoyed was learning all about the different things that people put into their tombs to have in the afterlife. Students got to choose what they would want to have in the afterlife and they chose sentimental objects from their lives and fun things to keep them entertained. We ended the unit talking about archaeologists and how they have helped us learn so much about ancient Egypt. Students got the opportunity to choose two objects throughout the school and try to describe them as if they were archeologists and had never seen them before. Students had a great time choosing what objects to describe and worked really hard to get into the mindset of an archeologist who would have to try and explain new artifacts to other people.
