Students in Second Grade through Fifth Grade have been learning about the different aspects of Ancient Indian culture. With our student teacher, Erica, they learned about the different foods that were eaten in Ancient India, as well as the social Caste System that was a way of life for Hindus. We started by looking at the different types of foods, and the spices that were used to cook the food. We smelled the main spices that were and still are used in Indian food, and tried to guess what spice we smelled.
We then took a look at the Caste System, and learned about the role of each caste. Students did not think it was fair that you could not move castes, and were forced to stay in the caste you were born in! Students acted out the different castes by performing jobs such as “fetching water from the well” or “ milking the cow,” and really learned the unfairness of it all. As we continue learning more about Ancient India, we will learn more about the different aspects of Indian culture.
