Our world is a magical place. Students in Kindergarten through 3rd grade have been exploring the unique qualities of each of the seven continents. First we looked at maps of the world, showing the seven continents, and then we made our own map. After each child was assigned a continent they read books learning about the climate, terrain, people and animals of their continent. For the youngest children this information was read to them and they drew pictures or dictated information they found interesting.
Next each child was assigned an animal indigenous to their continent. So a child who studied Africa might be assigned a giraffe or a zebra to research. As we read books we learned about the animal’s life cycle, habitat, diet and predators.
The children have now started to create a collage depicting the animal in its habitat. We started by talking about the horizon line, and divided our paper appropriately. Then each student had to decide what kind of sky they wanted. Some chose a sunset, some a sunny day and others a night sky. After the children create the habitat for their animal they will draw their animal.
