Over the next five weeks, fourth grade students will be participating in a book club with our student teacher, Kelly. In book club, they will be reading The Arrow Over the Door by Joseph Bruchac, a historical fiction novel that is written through the viewpoints of Stands Straight, a young Abenaki Indian, and Samuel, a young Quaker. The story takes place in the summer of 1777 as the British army is approaching the Indians. Throughout the book club, students will be analyzing the alternating viewpoints of Stands Straight and Samuel as well as completing comprehension questions each week to focus on the story timeline from their assigned readings. Class discussions will focus on point of view and how war with the British affects both Samuel and Stands Straight. At the end of book club, students will create a comic strip, poster, or short narrative to express their understandings of Samuel and Stands Sraight’s point of views.
