Each week, fourth, fifth, sixth, seventh and eighth graders learned about how various art forms can be used as a form of activism. In the beginning, students learned about the term, artavists, meaning individuals that use art to be an activist. After learning about artavists, we read the book, Artavist by Nikkolas Smith. While reading, a collective list was made about social justice issues and art forms mentioned within the book. Students had an opportunity to be an artavist themselves by determining a social justice issue and an art form of their choice, and create their own project. A field trip to the ArtRage Gallergy in Syracuse allowed students to experience many pieces of art, created by artavists within the community.
