The younger students, K-4, are doing an author study of Cynthia Rylant.
We have read picture books in which she gives humorous and touching insights into her early years, The Relatives Came and When I Was Young In the Mountains.
We have discovered that Cynthia Rylant uses humor in a lot of her writing, especially her stories for younger children. The students delighted in The Great Gracie Chase: Stop That Dog!
We are sampling some of the book series that Cynthia Rylant has written for young readers. We read Poppleton, the first in a series of stories about a pig named Poppleton who enjoys humorous adventures with his friends and neighbors. Henry and Mudge and the Bedtime Thumps introduced us to a young boy and his beloved dog and their adventures. We met Henry’s cousin Annie in Henry and Mudge and Annie’s Good Move. We read more about Annie and her pet rabbit Snowball in a book from her book series, Annie and Snowball and the Grandmother Night.
We look forward to Cynthia Rylant’s large body of work giving us more opportunities to discuss and evaluate her themes while continuing to meet and enjoy new characters.
