Our second through fourth graders have recently wrapped up a science unit on bats. In this unit we studied unique qualities and characteristics of specific bat species, compared bats to birds, learned about echolocation, and contributed to bat conservation. Some of our activities allowed students to create replica bat species using exact measurements and physical characteristics, role playing to simulate echolocation, and various other creative projects such as bat conservation posters and research flip books to collect information. One day, we even had two-experienced bat researchers come to our class to present additional information on bats. Graduate students from ESF came to share first hand experiences, knowledge, and real bat research equipment with the students. This was an interactive presentation and was a wonderful opportunity for students to create real-life connections to our unit.
