This spring the youngest students continued their study of Biomes which was started in the fall. Most recently we turned our attention to deserts. We read and discussed books such as Why Oh Why Are Deserts Dry? and A Walk in the Desert. We watched the Magic School Bus All Dried Up video which focuses on the adaptations of plants and animals. Children were surprised to learn that not all deserts are hot and that the daily temperature can change dramatically in a 24 hour period.
In March we turned our attention to the upcoming Science Celebration. Our youngest students will be sharing what they have learned about biomes. Children working with a partner were asked to be “experts” on one of the biomes we have studied as a class. The Kindergarten and 1st grade students will present on the rain forest, grasslands and desert. The 2nd grade students in the class were assigned a new biome to research. These students will teach the whole class about the Tundra, Boreal Forest and Deciduous Forest. In mid-March, the whole class had a field trip to the Rosamund Gifford Zoo to take photographs of animals that live in their assigned biome.
