In January we started reading Henry and Mudge and the Snowman plan, looking at the story elements of this story. Before they started reading we had a class about what story elements are and students had a good understanding of characters, setting and events in stories. They learned when figuring out the characters you ask who, the setting you ask when and where, and for the events of the story you ask what. They started reading the first two chapters of the book during silent reading time. When we met again we had a group discussion about what happened in the book, who they met, where and when the story took place, and what had happened. Then individually the students used a graphic organizer to fill in all the information we talked about, the characters they have met, the settings, and the events and drew a picture of their favorite event from the chapters they read. After they read the last two chapters of the book we had a discussion about what they wrote had happened in the first two chapters then we had a discussion about the last two chapters before they filled in a graphic organizer. When we finished Henry and Mudge each student in the book club got a different Mr. Putter and Tabby book to read where they continued to look at the story elements. Each week the students would share what they read about during silent reading with the peers in the book club before filling their graphic organizer about story elements. When they finish the Mr. Putter and Tabby books the students are using the graphic organizer they used to share with their peers everything that happened in their book.
