The New School started housing fertilized chicken eggs on March 7th, and are watching them grown in an incubator day by day. We looked at this as a great opportunity to teach our students all about chickens. Students in Kindergarten through Second Grade have been taking a Chickens class with our student teacher, Erica, where they have learned about the reproductive cycle of a chicken and the life cycle of a chicken. They have looked at the inside of an egg to learn about the different parts, and have also looked at a few different breeds of chickens, other than the Lakenvelders that we are housing at our school. Students went on scavenger hunts, egg hunts, cracked open eggs, and made several crafts and posters during Chickens class. Students LOVED all of the hands-on activities, and are excited to continue learning more about chickens.
