This spring, the students in grades 3-4 participated in a book club for Children of the Longhouse, by Joseph Bruchac. The focus of this book club was for students to practice making three different kinds of textual connections: text-to-self, text-to-text and text-to-world connections. The students eagerly shared their perspectives and interpretations of Children of the Longhouse, drawing on their personal experiences and relating those experiences to the plot of the story. Each week, students completed comprehension questions that focused on the more literal aspects of the assigned reading, as the classroom discussions encouraged more inferential questions and explanations. Students were encouraged to think critically about Children of the Longhouseand incorporate their knowledge from other Native American classes and stories. As a concluding activity for the book club, students visited Ska~nonh (the Great Peace Center for the Onondaga Nation) to continue to draw on the text-to-world connections and understand the perspectives of Native Americans in the 21stcentury.
