Since January, we began a class with the younger half of the school reading a wide variety of myths from Native American, South American, and African cultures that give voice to stories of how our world and elements of it have been created. We read many versions of how there came to be Day and Night. We read how fire was created, why there are phases of the moon, why chipmunks have stripes, how the earth was created, etc. It has been fun and allowed for lots of discussions.
While there are always more stories to read, we have more recently begun to have children create their own or retell stories.
As the children finish writing the stories, they are illustrating many of the pages. The last steps will be putting the words and pictures into a book they are creating and sharing with peers.
