This spring students in eighth grade participated in a science class that explored density and viscosity. Our class started with viewing a short video on density with water, oil and syrup. Students were then asked to come up with ten questions they had and then narrow them down to the best three. Students then shared their questions with classmates and we chose which ones to test. During our next class, we made predictions and tested out hypothesis. We also let our experiments sit on the window sill in the classroom for two weeks to see if they changed at all after they sat. Our next exploration was on viscosity. Students had to come up with an experiment that would test out our three liquids viscosity. Each student had a different idea, tested their ideas and recorded their results. They were then required to write up a lab report on their findings. As a final part of this science class, we explored the art of acrylic pouring and how density and viscosity plays out in this art. Students measured the density of the six different colors of paint and created paintings with four of the colors. In one painting each, they used coconut oil to see how that changed their paintings.
