Our kindergarten and first grade students have practiced several language comprehension skills while channeling an appropriate fantasy outlet through the book, “Brave Martha and the Dragon.” We practiced character analysis skills by using text evidence and inferential skills to describe characters based on both physical characteristics and personal character traits. Students practiced using a variety of their senses through an interactive popcorn activity. Each student was given a small bag of popcorn and we used all five senses to make a class compiled list of descriptions. Students enjoyed this interactive, yummy approach to building our adjective repertoire! After analyzing our characters, students made “character trading cards” where they included two relevant adjectives and an accompanying character illustration.
