For the past several weeks our book club read Jackie French Koller’s fantasy chapter book, Dragonling. This book follows the relationship of a young boy, Darek, who goes against everything he knows and befriends a young dragon in hopes to return him to his homeland and find a replacement family. Each week we met to talk about new aspects of Darek’s journey, his moral dilemmas, and the adventure that came along with each chapter. We focused on specific comprehension skills each meeting to further understand the story. Some of these skills included making predictions based on text and illustrations, making inferences, answering “wh” questions based on text evidence, and sequencing story events. Some of our activities included acting as inference detectives to solve investigations, hands on mystery bags to practice inference making skills, using hands on “comprehension cubes,” and creating our own interactive “Dragonling” board games. The students have loved channeling their fantasy-focused imagination for this story and the multitude of roles they got to take on to practice interactive reading.
