At the end of the year the students started learning about electricity. They were challenged to figure out how to light a lightbulb when given only a lightbulb, battery and one wire. In the process they learned about complete circuits, and the important parts of a battery and bulb. After lighting the bulb they were further challenged to find other ways to light that bulb. They also learned the difference between parallel circuits and series circuits and spent one class creating a “one finger, jiggle proof switch.” In their exploration of conductors and insulators, students had to predict if a given object would conduct electricity or not. They then tested their hypothesis. Next year we will continue this study to learn about electromagnets and how to use Morse Code to communicate.
