The older children at The New School, who are part in our Government unit, took a field trip to Skä•noñh – Great Law of Peace Center on Onondaga Lake. The students spent an hour examining the exhibits. They were assigned to answer a series of questions and identify a favorite exhibit and explain why they found it interesting or inspiring. After our fascinating visit, the children were asked to brainstorm ways this new museum could be made more child-friendly. They came up with some great ideas. Some ideas were very practical like provide more places to sit and read; spread the exhibits out more (they felt the gift shop was far to big and would be better used for exhibits), and include more 3D models. Other ideas were more creative such as include a children’s area where children can interact with a model of a miniature longhouse or village, try on clothing, play with food, sit in canoes etc. Another creative idea was to build a roof garden where the three sisters (corn, squash and beans) would be grown. Other suggestions included reopening the fort, provide summaries for children and more captions for artwork. We loved our visit and hope other children visit this important Haudenosaunee Heritage Center.
