During the beginning stages of our transition from distance to in-person learning at the school, our K-3, in-person students, participated in a read-aloud series during snack that addressed and discussed the importance of children and young people following their dreams and aspirations. The titles from the series included Ada Twist Scientist, by Andrea Beaty, Drum Dream Girl: How One Girl’s Courage Changed Music, by Margarita Engle, and Ish, by Peter H. Reynolds. Each of the books showcased a child main character who was unable to do or pursue what they loved to do due to judgment from others and/or discrimination. The read-aloud series had the intended purpose of showcasing the importance of doing what you love or enjoy. However, we also discussed important topics such as equality, fairness, and the importance of perseverance even when faced with adversity. The major point that we hoped the students would walk away with was that it’s not always about being the best at something or doing what everyone else is, it’s about truly enjoying and loving what you do.
