The youngest students have been taking part in a math class learning about fractions and geometry. They loved the hands-on activities!
In fractions, they began by identifying and creating equal parts of objects. They used playdoh and cookie cutters to cut shapes in half. By playing games such as Pizza Fractions and Fraction Pies they were able to practice identifying and creating halves, fourths and thirds. In class, they read math books such as Eating Fractions and Apple Fractions. They also made “pizzas” using fractions!
In geometry, the students practiced identifying shapes…circles, triangles, squares, rectangles, trapezoids and rhombuses. While reading math books such as When A Line Bends A Shape Begins and The Greedy Triangle they found these shapes in the pictures. They played geometry games, such as Shapes Around the Room where they had to locate different shapes around the school. Each student created different shapes using pipe cleaners to count how many sides and corners each shape has.
Each student has been practicing fractions and geometry on IXL and in their math books.
