In mid November Kindergarteners moved on from constructing words with objects, for example a Comb, Apple and a Turtle means CAT to making them with their sound boards. A sound board allows the students to have a group of consonants and one vowel (a) to make words.
They began by making two letter “words” like ap, an, at. And from there they would make 3 letter words with 3 sounds. They would form words like cap, map, can, ban, hat, and bat. With each word the students would sound out each letter. They had to decide by listening to the word that was said whether the first sound was changing or the third sound was changing. By the middle of December students were able to read words with “at” ending on sight. At the end of each lesson students made words with any of the consonants they had available, even if it was a nonsense word. They would write down their word on a piece of paper and then share the word that they made with all of their peers. Overall the students are becoming very comfortable with their letters and the sounds that they make.
