During the fall of 2020 our youngest students all studied shapes! Throughout their unit of study, they would be taking a close look at 12 different shapes, comparing some of the differences between them and identifying them and even searching for them throughout the school. To begin our unit, we introduced the shapes to the group, identified key differences between all of them like the amount of sides and talked about where we would see them every day. The students brainstormed where we see some of the shapes in our everyday life, like the clock is a circle! Once we identified places these shapes existed the students began to compare the similarities and differences between them. Naturally, we examined those questions they asked and investigated. In the latter part of our unit we looked at the shapes sides and compared how many sides each had. We learned sides are important in identification of the shape because there are multiple shapes with the same amount of sides! For example, we know that rectangle and square have the same amount of sides but do indeed look different. Finally, our students were even greeted by a surprise visit from the shape fairy! The shape fairy hid shapes all over school and asked the students to find them and report if the shapes were downstairs or upstairs. Upon completion of the unit, the students had an opportunity to show off their new shape knowledge in an IXL shape identification! They identified shapes by hearing their name read aloud to them!
