In our Historical Fiction Book Club we read Guns for General Washington – A Story of the American Revolution. This book was told from the point of view of a 19 year old soldier in General Washington’s army. The men are now at a standstill and have no artillery to defend themselves against the British Navy. The story takes place in parts of Massachusetts and Upstate New York. Because the story takes place partially in Upstate New York I had the students fill in a map as the soldiers traveled so that we could follow where they went as we read. This was great for them to see how close the soldiers actually were to where we live. Some of the students had even been to places that we had pointed out on our map. In addition to the map the students picked out unfamiliar words as they read and we then looked up those words on tablets and in dictionaries in our whole group meetings. The students also filled out KWL charts about what they Know, Wanted to know, and Learned about the American Revolution, and they created a magazine book ad about the book.
