Our Human Body class has turned into an opportunity for the students to discover how much our body systems contribute to everything we do in life. After discussing the Nervous system, we moved on to the respiratory system, where the students were able to construct their own pair of lungs and actually see the connection between the diaphragm and the lungs. Then we learned about the digestive system which we spend a lot of time on. All students we very mature while talking about gross things, and even making our own digestive system using a stocking, zip lock bag, crackers and orange juice. While some thought it was gross, others found it fascinating to see how our food ends up the way that it does! Most recently we have been learning about the muscular system, and which muscles control which part of our bodies everyday. We took it as an opportunity to see how quickly our muscles tire and how our respiratory system is connected: why do we get out of breath when we use our muscles? We will end our unit soon with the skeletal system and a quick discussion on a few others like the circulatory system and the immune system.
