Nine of our oldest students visited Art Rage Gallery on Thursday October 18, 2018 to see the exhibit INVISIBLE PEOPLE: Portraits of the Homeless by Neil Shigley. “San Diego based artist Neil Shigley’s work explores the subject of homelessness by giving visibility to homeless individuals through large-scale portraits. “I have focused my art on capturing the incredible character that life on the streets has given these individuals.” The students first watched a short video of the artist explaining his process and inspiration. Afterwards they had time to roam the gallery, identifying one image that spoke to them. In a small group discussion the students shared what it was about the portrait and story that resonated. This field trip built upon a recent visit by Al-Amin Muhammad who cares for the homeless in Syracuse. Both experiences highlighted the importance of reaching out to the homeless, and that being ignored is the worst possible response.
