One of the many empowering experiences at The New School happens during Investigations in the afternoon. For an hour, all children have the opportunity to teach what we call a “Legacy.” The tradition was started many years ago when we initiated a discussion that focussed on two questions, “How do you want to be remembered?” “What would you like to be your legacy?” Over the years our children have all risen to this challenge sharing passions, games, craft ideas, talents and so much more. For us there is no official definition of a legacy, but we do ask children to consider something they would like to be remembered by. This year we have already had a number of our students rise up to this challenge. One student wanted to share her passion for creating unique character designs using Fimo. After the children in her legacy created their designs, she took their creations home to bake. Another student wanted to share his passion for baseball. He offered, with teacher support, a baseball clinic where children had time to learn how to throw, catch, run and hit the ball. We have had other children bring games from home to teach and share.
