2nd and 3rd graders are using Legos to learn about simple and powered machines, using hands-on activities.
First they investigated structures and forces, incorporating both rigid and flexible shapes in building deck chairs and drawbridges.
Applying principles they learned about levers, they made drumming machines. Innovating, they added pieces or moved pieces around to change the tapping pattern. Attaching a motor provided more opportunities to explore.
Next they will explore the use of levers in making windshield wipers. Motorizing them will allow students to observe the wipers moving in parallel motion, as well as clapping together.
The students will also explore wheels and axles. They will build a vehicle and then explore how a flywheel enhances its ability to move. Attaching a motor will provide more opportunities to measure and compare distance traveled, speed, and climbing ability. They can observe how alterations to their vehicle, such as changing wheel size, affects their vehicle’s performance.
Although the children work hard in Lego class, it mostly feels like play.
