This spring, students in grades 3-4 participated in a unit on writing a persuasive letter. We read informational articles to gather baseline information about how littering affects the ecosystems on Earth. We began this unit by viewing letter examples and highlighting different aspects of the letter to view how a letter is formatted. As we focused on writing their own letters, students were then asked what they would like to write about in relation to a friend who litters. Students were very enthusiastic about informing a friend the effects of litter on animals, environment, and ocean life. As we continued our unit, we viewed a PSA created by a college student that showed real-life examples of littering. We also read Where Does Garbage Go? by Isaac Asimov during a snack time to continue relating their persuasive letters to real-life. As a finishing up activity, students wrote a new persuasive letter with a subject of their choice addressed to a person of their choice.
