Over the last few months, all of the kindergarten and first graders have been in a magnet class during Investigations that was a total of five classes. The groups were split up into two groups and they met about once a week. This class was incredibly fun for them because they all love magnets and they got to do a lot of activities and experiments! Throughout this class, they learned what magnetism was and how magnets work. They learned about the words magnetic and not magnetic, and they have gotten exceptionally good at being able to tell whether an object is magnetic or not magnetic. Along with those words, we learned about magnets attracting and repelling their north and south poles. The students got to use various kinds of magnets such as circle magnets, bar magnets, and magnet wands. We were able to compare the different magnets and see which one was stronger.
They experimented with a discovery bottle and got to use their magnets to see what they could discover, both magnetic and not magnetic items. The students also got to use their magnet wands to move iron filings on their magnet man. They got to make him have hair, a beard, etc. They all enjoyed this activity the most. All of the students have learned so much about magnets and they did great knowing and remembering the vocabulary learned.
