Children need to learn early that individuals can make a difference and shape society with their ideas and actions. All year we have been learning about ways individuals have succeeded in this endeavor. Children have learned that change can be immediate but it can also take a long time.
Each week we read books or show videos that showcase the work of a person or group. As we read books we discuss and compare where and when the action takes place, what is the vision or problem, and what are the actions that brought about change. Then we ask what traction the vision has and finally what can we do to help? Some of the books we have read books describe Wangari’s trees of peace, Ghandi’s inspiring walk to the sea to harvest salt, Malala’s brave quest to bring education to girls in Pakistan.
We have also watched videos that document efforts by individuals to combat pollution and the proliferation of plastics.
Finally we have invited individuals from the Syracuse community who are making a difference every single day. We welcomed Al-Amin Muhammad to share his vision for feeding the homeless, Dan Stricker and his work to beautify Meadowbrook Drive with flower beds and birdhouses, Adam Sudan who reaches out to our refugee and new American communities for opportunities to share their culture, and perspective over a delicious meal and Dick Ford who has worked tirelessly to bring music to children in the Syracuse City School district by providing free instruments and lessons to High School students.
In the spring we will focus our attention of ways the students at The New School can make a difference.
