Over the last two months the Kindergarten students, twice a week, explored counting, coins (pennies, nickels and dimes), measurement using non standard units, coins and classification.
- Students compared lengths. For example which is longer 7 links or 4 unifix cubes? Using a balance they compared the weight of various objects using units such as unifix cubes, blocks, and stones.
- At the counting station they counted different objects in a paper bag. How many pencils, glue sticks, and stickers were each bag. They had to count and record their findings.
- For their study of coins, children looked at both sides of the coins using a magnifying glass. They recorded what they saw and discussing what was on each coin. This will help them distinguish between a penny and a nickel, a nickel and a dime. To further practice this skill they played Spooky Old Tree, where they earned pennies and had to trade them in for nickels. They also played the Money Game.
- Most recently the children have started learning about classification. They started by playing the game, Guess my Rule, and then applied this grouping concept to “Yehti” where they had to sort Yehti by their characteristics (number of antennae, type of eyes, shape of face etc,) Finally working with a partner they created a poster which documented how they sorted geometric shapes into two or more groups. The children were able to sort by the number of sides, and types of geometric shapes
