In math class over the last six weeks we worked on breaking numbers up to twelve into two parts, which helps the students start to develop basic addition skills. I used many different things in class to help the students see that numbers can be broken into two parts. They built block towers, drew cats and dogs, played card games, and used variousĀ block manipulatives to visualize this. The students really enjoyed creating their own towers. When breaking numbers into two parts we also briefly looked at subtraction. We then moved on to place value and counting. I used placemats and blocks to help introduce the concept of place value to the students. During the last lesson that I taught they were able to create their own two digit numbers using cards, as well as the place mats and blocks to, be able to visualize these numbersĀ for themselves.
