A group of children in grades 1 though 3 explored how humans measure their world! We started with length and using yard sticks, meter sticks, tape measures and rulers we measured objects around the school. We discussed the various units that can be used, both metric and standard. We learned which unit is longer, an inch or a centimeter. For weight we used a balance scale to compare ounces and grams. When measuring capacity we learned how many different ways we can measure a quantity of sand or water. The standard method of gallons, cups, pint, quarts, teaspoons, tablespoons provided a challenge! The metric system is so much easier. Finally we looked at time and practiced reading the clock. Oops, it was time to finish the unit.
