Students in grades 2, 3 and 4 were part of a three week measurement unit where we explored length, weight, temperature and volume. In each lesson students used tools to explore the huge world of measurement. After studying a thermometer and the two scales of measurement (Fahrenheit and Centigrade) students measured the temperature of some water. Then they added two ice cubes and observed, recorded and graphed the resulting drop in temperature. They made hypothesis on what would happen to the temperature if the water and melted ice was left for a couple of hours. When measuring length, they estimated and then measure five lengths of ribbon in both inches and centimeters. Students had more difficulty measuring in millimeters. In the weight unit students estimated and weighed four different objects in ounces and grams, working hard not to confuse the two systems! Student also discussed and measured time, and elapsed time. Finally the volume center which was a messy one, students estimated the volume of three containers and then poured water into the containers to measure the volume in milliliters.
