This December and January, students in a second grade measurement class learned all about standard and non-standard measurements. We started with length and comparing the lengths of links, cubes and rods. We then measured objects with these items. As we explored length more, we discussed the importance of a standard and read a silly book called the King’s Foot where a bed gets made way to small for the queen because the king and the apprentice’s foot are not the same length! We measured with inches and centimeters. We examined rulers and tape measures. We discussed larger measures such as feet, yards, miles, meters and kilometers. As we thought about all of the standard measures we had at our disposal, we brainstormed how to measure the weight of items. We concluded our measurement unit with two classes where we hunted for items around the school that we thought weighed about the same and then used grams and then ounces to weigh our items. We even had fun trying to figure out just how many grams in one ounce.
