Is music important you? It’s important to us too. Because we are a small school, we can’t offer some of the extracurricular activities that large school districts are able to. That means we have to be creative to include music in our curriculum. Our students enjoy singing once a week with Ken Hynson, a parent of an alumnus, who has continued to volunteer in our school even though his son graduated 4 years ago! He also mentors three older students who are part of a guitar club. As often as we can, we invite musicians to share their talents. Most recently we invited a trumpeter to come support our reading of Trumpet of the Swans. Students listen and draw to music and we take them on field trips to OCC. In December, half the school, enjoyed listening to OCC’s Guitar Ensemble playing pieces by Pieter Van Der Staak, and Heitor Villa-Lobos. Nothing better than listening to live music. Some of our students have private music lessons and we invite them to share their talents with us. Most recently we have examined the connection between poetry and lyrics. Older children brought their favorite lyrics to share and discuss. Then we listened to the songs themselves.
