The Native Americans class focused on the Iroquois tribe. We focused on the Iroquois tribe because it is right in our back door. The Onondaga nation is just south of Syracuse. We started with an overview of the Iroquois nation. They went over how stories were passed on, the six nations of the Iroquois, and the homes the Iroquois lived. When exposed to new pieces of information they completed visual thinking strategies by going through images. Once a background was formed, we dove into the games and holidays. Students were exposed to favorite sports and games of chance that the Iroquois are known for. They experienced playing the bean game and using a lacrosse stick. Students got to learn about the Iroquois holidays and create their own version of a rattler using an easter egg. The sound is similar to the sounds heard while watching ceremonial dances.
