In a series of three lessons the 2nd, 3rd and 4th grade students learned about four different parts of speech. First they learned the function of verbs in the English language and that every English sentence must contain at least one verb. Then we practiced enhancing verbs with adverbs by playing a game of charades. Students had to act out an action and also convey a particular adverb for their peers to guess. They really enjoyed this activity and it may be a game that they can teach to their peers in the future. Finally students reviewed what a noun and adjective are, they looked at pictures from Animalia by Graeme Base and dissected each accompanying sentence, identifying the nouns, adjectives, verbs and adverbs. The different parts of speech were presented to students in such a way that they would be interesting and relatable for the students.
