We started off our third year of a “Government” unit, by learning about party platforms and planks. In advance of meeting with a representative from each of the four political parties with presidential candidates, the older students were assigned to read sections of each platform. From their reading they had to develop two questions for the party representative. Many of the planks related to the focus of last year’s unit – groups of individuals who have had to fight for their rights, such as women, people with disabilities, Native Americans, veterans, people of color, the LGBT community and workers. During the first week of school we welcomed Howie Hawkins to our school. The children asked thoughtful and insightful questions. As Howie left he said our students had a better understanding of the issues of the day than many adults he meets. Sadly I was so engaged that I forgot to take any photos.
