In the fall, 2020, the 4-6 graders got to learn about rocks and minerals. To start our rocks and minerals class, we learned about the three rock types (Sedimentary, Metamorphic, and Igneous) and some characteristics of each type of rock, including how each type is formed. Then, we moved into how rocks are ever-changing and studied the rock cycle! The students then created a large-scale model of the rock cycle on the floor. We spent a good bit of time on the rock cycle as it has many parts to it. After that, we learned about some properties of rocks and each student either collected a rock or was given a rock to observe, describe, and classify. After we classified rocks, each student was assigned a rock to research and create a Flip Grid on! Many of the students enjoyed the rocks and minerals unit very much, continually talking about it for the remainder of the semester!
