Students participated in a Solar system unit where we talked about the name of the planets, their size, their distance from the sun, the moon phases, and constellations. The first-class students listened to a book about the planets and began drawing and coloring in the planet they were designated. I then turned each child’s planet picture into headbands for the following class. In the second class, I created the sun, the 8 planets, and their orbits with chalk outside. Students put on their headbands and stood where they thought their planet was in relation to the sun. We then listened to a song and looked at a book to see who needed to move. In the following class, we created the planets using playdough to talk about each planet’s color and size. Next class, we discussed what the constellations were, the milky way, and much more. Finally, we discussed the moon phases and students created a paper plate showing the eight phases.
