This fall students in seventh & eighth grade participated in a science class that explored density and viscosity. Our class started with viewing a short video on density with water, oil and syrup. Students were then asked to come up with ten questions they had and then narrowed them down to the best three. Students shared their questions with classmates and chose one to write an experiment for. This practiced our lab writing techniques and how to be specific with our words for an experiment. Our next exploration was on viscosity. Students had to come up with an experiment that would test the viscosity of oil, water & syrup. Each student had a different idea, tested their ideas and recorded their results. They were then required to write up a lab report on their findings that included a graphic of their data results. We explored how best to show this through graphing multiple ways. As a final part of this science class, we explored the art of acrylic pouring and how density and viscosity plays out in this art activity. Students measured the density of the different colors of paint and created paintings with some of the colors. In one painting each, they used coconut oil to see how that changed their paintings viscosity & density.
