In late October, early November we began reading a book called Tuck Everlasting by Natalie Babbitt. This is a book that essentially asks the question if you had the choice to live forever would you do it? This is how the book is introduced to the students, as they had been talking about immortality recently. Right off the bat they were excited to start our new book club.
Part of the main focus for this class was literary devices. We introduced new literary devices and we reviewed literary devices that they had already heard of before. The students learned about Imagery, Tone, Hyperboles, and they reviewed their knowledge of Metaphors and Similes. They also learned new ways to organize their thoughts by using graphic organizers. This was used as a tool for finding imagery and using evidence for the tone of a chapter. We also reviewed story arcs. This is something the students will finish at the same time we finish the book.
