Vooks is an online digital library with animated books aimed towards young readers. Throughout the fall, going into winter, I would show the students a Vook and during the reading, I would pause the video and ask students questions about the book we were watching. This is referred to as a “pause and ponder” on the Vooks website. I covered many different topics using Vooks. Some of the topics were just for fun, such as Halloween and winter holiday books. Some topics covered events happening in our lives such as the election and staying home during a pandemic. Some topics covered social emotional health such as learning to treat one another like family or learning how to cope with fears. Other topics were simply educational such as courageous people who changed the world. I also used Vooks to relate to my Africa lesson showing them a book about Wangari and the trees she planted to restore the environment in her home in Africa. Vooks was a great way to incorporate different topics and different learning experiences for the students. They really enjoyed the Vooks that I shared with them.
