The five oldest students volunteered to help the League of Women Voters in a voter registration drive at the downtown Centro bus hub. After a brief orientation, the children clutching clip boards, registration forms, buttons, and voter registration identification badges were encouraged to approach individuals waiting for a bus and ask them, “Are you a registered voter?” This sounds simple, but it took a lot for twelve and thirteen year olds to complete such a simple task. And then they had to be ready to respond to the answer given. The children all agreed that the first attempt was the hardest but with practice it became incredibly satisfying.
We are so proud of our oldest students. They conducted themselves with such maturity and grace and left feeling empowered by the experience. Because of their efforts 16 more people are registered to vote! They would have been happy to stay another hour.
