As part of our social studies unit on Government, the oldest students went on a field trip to Seneca Falls to learn more about the Women’s Rights Movement. They visited the Women’s Hall of Fame, which was opened in 1969. The Hall of Fame’s mission is to recognize the contributions made by women to our society. The children each selected one of these women, making notes about their early influences, major accomplishments and significance related to women’s rights. Some of the women they selected were Katherine Switzer who was the first woman to run a marathon, Gertrude Ederle who was the first woman to swim the English Channel, Eileen Collins who was the first American woman to pilot a space craft, Geraldine Ferraro, who was the first woman to run for Vice President from a major party. In the spring we will return to Seneca Falls to visit the Women’s Rights National Historical Park and to learn even more.
