This fall and spring our K-2s have been learning about Earthworms. We began by digging for real worms outside. We found some. We observed their behavior and drew them. We learned about what worms need to survive, their external features, their internal body parts, and their importance in our ecosystems. We have drawn and colored representations of worms both inside and out. We created a worm habitat with cardboard showing the under and above ground spaces with other creatures, earth, stones, worm tunnels, and plants and water. We ordered some Night Crawlers in the mail so we could have some larger worms to observe. We did some gentle experiments with our worms. We learned from our experiments that worms prefer the dark, will move toward a moist atmosphere, and how quickly they can move on a flat surface and in the soil. We measured our worms and studied how they move. We presented our worm explorations during our science celebration and impressed our families with how much we had learned! Lastly, we gave our worms leftover fruit and vegetable bits from our lunches and watched to see how quickly they ate them up! We will now release our Earthworm friends into the wild!
